On the Job training and Off the job training


On the job training

This training which is facilitated for the employee at the job site. An experienced employee pass done his/her skill to the new employee. On the job training is usually done for practical task to ensure that the job defined is done accordingly. It is evidenced through observations that this training is done worldwide at the present. Direct instructions are given by the skilled employee to the new employee to make sure that the job is done in a correct manner.


The pros related with on the job training are:

  •  An immediate feedback can be given for both the parties since the two parties are available at the job site.
  •  A full practical experience can be gained by the new employee so that the tasks can be fulfilled with minimum obstructions.
  • Evaluation and monitoring can be done. Can measure the performance of the new employee.
  • Since the training is done on the job site the cost of training can be minimized, and help to balance the financial status of the organization.  It is easier to arrange and manage this type of training.


The cons related to on the job training are:

  • Conflicting  situations can be aroused when employees are not properly trained by their teachers. So when a particular task is assigned to a new employee if the work is not done properly, this can cause to reduce the efficiency and productivity towards the organization. It is evidenced that not every employee has the ability of training individuals.
  •  On the job training can cause the trainer to distract him from the job .Thereby the mentors’ productivity will be less and there will be a less time to do their own tasks.
  •  A high risk is involved by using this technique. It is because there are safety precautions that need to be taught prior entering to the job. Unless the employees are properly trained, there could be injuries that can occur at the work place.


Off the job training

Off the job training technique is done by taking away the employees from their job site to be trained. Off the job training comprise of a place specifically allocated for the purpose of training near the actual work place. The tools and techniques are equipped at these places for the employees to do their training in an efficient way. There are general methods in conducting off the job training like Day release, distant learning, block release courses, sandwich courses, sponsored courses in higher education, self-study, computer based training.

Pros related to off the job training

  •  New thinking and creativity of the employee is enhanced. A wider range of skills or qualifications can be received via off the job training which will enhance the productivity of the organization.
  •  Loss of fear. This happens when the employee has  the freedom to start with the activities, even an error is occurred there is no fear since he is not in the actual job site. 
  •  Since the outside expertise and specialists are available , this paves the way to enrich the knowledge and capabilities of the employees.
  •   Employees will be facilitated to be more confident when starting the job since they have already been trained off the job.


Cons related to off the job training.

  •         High cost is involved in off the job training. The expenses will be high in the financial analysis. Eg : transport cost , accommodation cost.
  •          Time loss of the individual going for training. This is a major disadvantage that the organization may come across. Since the time is lost the expected potential output from the existing employee cannot be received.
  •         Flexibility problems .Sometimes the existing employees come across situations that they cannot have time for the new employees. So there will be obstructions for them to be trained.
  •         The new employees that have been recruited may still need more training and induction in order to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
